In an effort to inform the community on the quality of their stream water, the Friends have been analyzing the stream at eight points.

In a collaborative effort with higher education, college interns and volunteer professors sample water from He'eia stream and the fringing reef to identify the clarity and composition of the water.

Physical and chemical parameters are being examined such as pH, salinity, temperature, nutrient levels, dissolved oxygen and turbidity. Samples are then taken back to the labs for further analysis.

Apart from monitoring water quality of our bay, this project also offers students an opportunity to apply their science in the field and thereby gain a greater understanding of the process and how it applies to the community. Students enthusiastically share their knowledge with community members as part of our outreach education program.

Interested in an internship? Internships are available for both spring and fall semesters. Interns will receive a stipend and in some cases independent credit hours. Give us a call on 247-3156 or send us an email for more information.
