The Friends of He'eia is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster a sense of stewardship towards the natural and cultural resources of the land and sea.

Founded in 1982, the Friends were formed by community members when Ke Alohi Point was under the threat of development by its former landowner. Plans were underway to build a condominium complex on the 18-acre site and a marina was to replace the 600-year-old He’eia Fishpond.

Individuals and groups from the Kaneohe community appealed to the state of Hawaii to intervene and preserve the site for its historic significance. In ancient times, this was a site of a Hawaiian heiau, Kalae'ula'ula.

A steering committee of community members drafted a plan to operate the site as an educational and cultural center for the public. With the help of various grants, volunteers and members the Friends are today able to offer a wide range of services to the community.
